Characters are affected by environmental and physical factors such as Hunger, thirst, climate temperature, day and night visuals, sleep deprivation and physical damage from attack or falling. Survival is accomplished by foraging for food and numerous resources such as berries, wood, stone, leather, meat and twine.

As a Character progresses in levels, the player can designate points to various stats such as Health, Stamina, Mana and more. Crafting abilities also advance as the character levels. Players can craft tools, weapons, magic spells and structures that will allow for easier survival and foraging. Structures of various materials are able to be place into the game's with full player and creature interaction. Structures provide a base for storage of supplies and protection from attack. Structures can be destroyed by both players and NPC creatures under certain conditions. Animals in the game can be tamed and ridden. Boars, Horses, Griffins and even Dragons to name a few. Magic, Melee and mounted attacks are the main combat features. When your character dies you respawn at your starting city and all your items remain on your corpse. Any Player can claim the items from your corpse if they search you before you can return to your corpse. You do have the ability to change your re-spawn location later in the game.

Dark and Light is set on the planet of Alpha – a satellite of Gaia that the population travelled to when Gaia was attacked by dark magical forces and eventually collapsed. Things are safer on Alpha during the day, but during the night the planet plunges into darkness and dark forces rise – an effect that’s exacerbated during eclipses that cause a bloodthirsty rampage among the local wildlife, but also gives brave adventurers a chance to harvest incredible rare magical resources.

In Dark and Light you’ll pledge your allegiance to one of three factions, the Vardo, the Estel or the Zaharul, each of which has their own busting city which can be reinforced by the player population assisting to build new fortifications and useful buildings. There’s a vast open world outside those city walls for you to explore and conquer though, populated by all sorts of creatures, such as the crafty little goblins, half-human half-horse centaurs, huge and deadly cyclopses, unicorns, ends, dragons, snow monsters and much more besides.

As well as fantastical beasts, there are also more conventional types of animals that can be hunted or domesticated, such as boar, horses, deer, goats, elephants and leopards. The mixture of fantasy and real life beasts makes for a complex ecosystem, and you’ll never know what you’ll come across as you roam the wilderness. Some of the mythical creatures, such as the goblins or centaurs can be bargained with and you can actually tame some beasts to use as mounts – such as horses, unicorns, wyverns, elephants, gryphons, pegasus and even some aquatic creatures.
