Soon will come the day when PC gamers experience a great new zombie apocalypse, released on Valve's Steam platform. There's just one small problem: we don't know when this new game will premiere. It could be months, weeks, or... DayZ.

In this game (pronounced Day-Zee), you are stuck in Chernarus, a fictional, post-Soviet, post-apocalyptic Russia simply trying to survive. The zombies are not the slow-moving undead type of The Walking Dead or Night of the Living Dead but the more violent, virus-turned kind, à la 28 Days Later or World War Z.

DayZ got its start as a mod for another tactical shooter game, 2009's ArmA II (and its Operation Arrowhead expansion) for Windows, a combo that costs $24.99 on Steam. DayZ is not just a single-player shoot-'em-up, but also a full-blown massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), and a hybrid game where players can work cooperatively... or not-so-cooperatively. The free DayZ offshoot got 600,000 players in just a few months, giving ArmA II new life.

Some consider the mod alone the best zombie game ever, and among the scariest games of all time. In fact, it just won a Best Hybrid MMO award from Pax East 2013. You start out with nothing, get one life only, must mind what you eat, avoid deathly diseases—and evade those pesky zombies. The mod's developer, Dean 'Rocket' Hall, created it as a trainer for soldiers while in the New Zealand Army. He has since scaled Mount Everest, delaying his work with Prague-based Bohemia Interactive in creating the new standalone release.

This caused the game to miss its first ship date in 2012, and it still isn't available. Given that we have no idea what day DayZ will arrive for public consumption on Windows, let alone make it to consoles, we had to find out: what are the scariest, greatest zombie games already available? What titles will keep you sweating bullets and sleeping with the light on and a machete under your pillow after a few hours of intense game play? Here's a collection of the best games you can already get that are similar to DayZ and—dare we say it—maybe even better.

Project Zomboid

DayZ developer Dean Hall called Project Zomboid 'fantastic from a single player perspective' in an interview with Edge. From U.K.-based developer The Indie Stone, this game is all about surviving as long as you can in a pixelated zombie-overrun future. It's available for PC, Mac, and Linux for £4.99 ($7.42).

State of Decay

If you want an open world and some straight-up gun combat—the kind promised by the standalone DayZ—you may want to check out State of Decay. The emphasis is also on staying alive, not on taking out the dead. It sold 500,000 copies on Xbox Live Arcade in just a few days and will eventually make it to Windows PCs via Steam.

Miasmata

Miasmata is a lot like what Myst would be if Myst were a first-person survival adventure game. It may be cheating to include it here since it doesn't have any actual zombies, but it does require you (playing a scientist) to discover a cure for the plague you've been infected with. Problem is, you have to do it on a remote island full of dangers. Get it for Windows on Steam or GOG.com (home of downloadable, DRM-free games) for $14.99.

Dead Island Riptide

The first trailer for Dead Island hit back in February 2011, telling a story of zombie infestation at a remote resort in reverse. It was justifiably hailed as amazing. The game didn't quite live up to that, but garnered a sequel anyway in April 2013. Both the original and sequel are available on PS3, Xbox 360, and Windows PC ($19.99 for the original, $39.99 for the sequel).

Dead

It's been a few years since the outbreak of Green Flu virus that caused the zombie mutation of Left 4 Dead and its 2009 sequel. But that doesn't make the two games any less thrilling; both still have scores of 89 percent at MetaCritic for Windows PC and Xbox 360. It's all about cooperative play in this action horror series. You can get both on PS3, plus Linux and Macintosh as well (via Steam, $19.99 each). Plenty of updates are available for both games on desktop platforms.

The Last of Us

Is The Last of Us the perfect horror video game? Many critics think so. Released only a month ago, it's already won multiple awards for everything from its atmospheric world to the science behind the zombie outbreak. Critics complained it's more of a shooter than a role-playing game, and that it's only available on the PS3 ($59.99)—but those critics soon got caught up playing the game and were never heard from again.
