My Sims Game Keeps Crashing Mac

Why does my Sims 3 game keep shutting down? I have a windows vista basic computer, and I've had sims ever since I've had this computer (which is about 2-3 years). This has never been a problem before and it's only just recently started happening.

I bought a new iMac and when I nstalled University, the game now crashes after twenty to forty minutes of play. I also get the error message 12, which is about not having enough memory to play the game. My new Mac has 16 GB of memory. It seems all Mac users are experiencing this issue. It helps to save the game every 5 to 10 minutes, but you cannot travel to different worlds without it crashing.

I am re-posting this here because I want to spread this suggestion.
I sent an email to Cider or transgaming.com. They are the company that makes the Mac portion of this game. I think we all should begin to email them. We are clearly beating, the long dead, EA horse. They clearly DO NOT CARE! Place the link to the Mac forum into your email.

    Hello simmers,
I have compiled a procedure that should help with lag, freezing issues, crashing, and even some glitches.
First: Go through your HD and trash any unneeded files as well as applications you never use. Empty your trash. This should free up some disk space.
Second: Trash the items in your downloads folder. Empty your trash.
Third: Now open these folders in the following order, HD>Users>(open the user you are in)>library>preferences>The Sims 3 Preferences. Trash al of the files you see in this folder. Also search for files under the name 'com.transgaming' and 'ipatcher.' Empty your trash.
Fourth: open your disk utility. Click on the HD in this window, then select 'repair permissions.' Wait until this is done.
Fifth: Now open the following folders in the order, My Documents--> Electronic Arts--> The Sims 3--> DCbackup. Trash any files you see here. Also search for files under the name 'compositorCache' and 'simCompositorCache.' Empty your trash.
Sixth: Restart your computer, and launch the sims 3.
I've had numerous freezing, crashing, and lag problems previous to doing this, and now my game runs VERY smoothly. I recommend that anyone who is having problems with their game try it too. Let me know if you have any questions about the process.
If it works for you, do the disk utility repair every week, and empty the Sims 3 Preferences,' 'com.transgaming,' 'ipatcher,' 'DCbackup,' 'compositorCache,' and 'simCompositorCache,' about every time you play.
    Happy problem free simming

I only get lag, but what has EA to say about this? They haven't replied to any of this, can they not be bothered? I'd like to hear your opinion on this EA. There are LOADS of angry users on here and what do you do? Go and make a new expansion pack yet still not bother to make us mac users be able to play the game. This is stupid.

Hello! I also have the same problem. Running On MacBook pro OSX Lion. if anyone has came up with a solution on how to fix this, that would be great! IDK why EA won't make updates for mac. We all understand that this game was made specificly for PC users. But I've had sims 3 for years and never had a problem with running it on Mac. Hope to get some sort of answer soon. Thanks!!

    HEY
so today I just installed Island Paradise and was bouncing off the walls in excitement for it but... I played for about 10-30 mins b4 the sims in C-A-S would go all black and when I quit and did it again they were fine but when I finished out of C-A-S the whole world of Isla Paridiso was BLACK and the water was grey!!! This is a terrible thing that happened the last two times I opened up sims 3!!!
My theory was if I left my Mac alone for a while it might take some time to reboot and calm down. So thats exactly what I did I turned off my computer, Took it off charge and put it somewhere where it could calm down. I then went outside and played with my guinea pigs and rabbits for around 2 hours... went out at 12 came back at 1:45. I then turned on my computer and let it sit there on the desktop no windows open for around 15 minutes. I then went back to my computer loaded up sims 3... I then loaded up Isla paradiso town and created my sims... nothing happened, made a house for my family... nothing happened... happily played for a while and the game never crashed. I was so happy and got so far in my game letting it sit there for a while to cool off really was the solution for me.
Please try this and if it doesn't work please don't blame me I was only trying to help

Do I even need to say it?
I'm having the exact same issue as most of the people here. When I first got my macbook pro, the sims games worked perfectly for quite some time, but for a while now I have been unable to play because when I open my game, it freezes every single time I get to the point where I move a sim into a household and am waiting for the actual gameplay part to load. Instead everything freezes up for a few seconds and then my sims window is gone and I'm getting some error report type of thing, and even if I reopen the game from the error window, it will do the same thing. Every time. There seems to be no solution even after weeks of not being able to play my rather expensive games. I miss the sims
    Sincerely,
Why does my game case say Mac on it when it hardly works at all on Mac?! :?:

Really starting to hate sims because I cant play more than 30 minutes

Well I guess I'm just going to be another person complaining about their game chasing!
BUT, in addition to uninstalling the game from my computer then re-installing it (which believe me, was a royal pain because I have all except 3 stuff packs) my game STILL crashes.
ANNNNDD for whatever reason my game saves as usual then pops up on the launcher, but today when I logged on, the game was no longer there!!! I have NO saved games!
Do you know how irritating that is?! I'm sure you do!

Yup. Same here. I get into CAS, and everything goes black. Or when I can get past the CAS issue, when I move them in or try to play for more than 10 minutes at a time, the game crashes. I've learned to save every 2 minutes out of fear of losing it all. I love my Mac, but I'm sick of not being able to play Sims.
Really wish that TheSims was as compatible with a Mac computer as it is with Windows computer. Right now, I see no point in even looking into buying The Sims 4, because if I have these issues right now with a Mac, what kind of issues am I going to have with the new game?

The reason most people crash in CAS is because despite the amount of RAM your computer has, Cider only allows you to use a max of 2GB of RAM. I personally play on Windows 7 via Bootcamp and I know that you shouldn't have to, but that honestly is the only way to play TS3 to the fullest. I have a higher end iMac and even I was having issues. Some people claim that they can play fine by purging their RAM during gameplay, but that seems like a hassle to me. Not that my way isn't a hassle for some people either. Ha

Same here, trying to run Sims on a Mid 2010 iMac.
    My experiences so far:
Purchased it last week from Origin, installed it and the expansions in order and started after every expansion so that the updates could install. Now I'm the same as everyone else, it crashes after 10-20 minutes. :?
Even tried to reinstall the game in case something was wrong with my installation. I took the time to test after every expansion, starting a new city and check if I could play. It seemed to me that after each additional expansion the loading times on the cities took longer than with the expansion before.
The base game and the first few expansions ran fine, but somewhere after Showtime or Supernatural it started to get worse. so I'm assuming it has something to do with all the expansions overloading the game... 2GB limit on Cider could be the issue as someone earlier wrote, but I'm no expert on this matter.

Like other people, prettey much always in CAS it goes to the normal mac mouse and then i have to force restart it. also, two days back i went into buy mode and the bar at the bottom was almost all a bunch of black boxes, then i went straight back into live mode and tried to save before it crashed... it didn't let me save. I had to force quit it again by restarting my computer and then when i reloaded sims the next day, the game had gone! :x
also, i couldn't install the latest game update because some 'files had been modified'. I uninstalled all my game and deleted all files relating to sims 3 and reinstalled and it still said that...
my game is pretty buggy - so annoying!! :x

Having absolutely same problem as all the people here are! Don't know what to do, I tried everything, but still can't do anything with my issue - the game crashes while playing and throwing me to the desktop. HELLO EA, WHY ARE YOU SO INDIFFERENT? WHAT ARE WE PAYING OUR MONEY FOR? I'm really disappointed.

    hey guys ...
just recently i bought a macbook air (11 inch) and of course i downloaded the sims 3 ... i have about 5 additional expansion packs and i can get the game up and running for about an hour or an hour and a half and then when i go to hit the number 2 or 3 to speed up the current action, my computer makes this noise and i know that means i have to force quit ... which really sucks because at that point, its too late to save and even when you do get to save it, that takes away from the time you actually play the game because you find yourself saving the game about 4 or 5 times every half hour ... after i force quit, i let the game sit for a second or two and start it back up and then after that i can play the game for about 15 minutes and then it freezes and gives me a notification that says 'The Sims 3 closed unexpectedly' which is really starting to be a bummer ... at this point, its really making me not wanna play ... im getting VERY frustrated ... I know i wrote a lot but PLEASE HELP !!!!
    thanks !!

I've had the sims 3 for about one year and it crashes every 30 minutes! The latest family I made was four people and I had to go on five times to create them! :x This is really annoying and I hope EA will fix it soon!

I have recently been purging my RAM periodically to play with out crashing, but I was thinking that maybe its crashing because I need more RAM on my Mac. After I read thus quote, I'm wondering if a RAM update would even make a difference. Anyone know?
  • edited January 2014
How much RAM do you have? 4Gb should be the minimum with 8Gb recommended because you want the game to have the entire 2Gb it can access.
I have 16Gb RAM in my MacBook Pro and still have to purge my RAM every 10-15 minutes or so, upgrading from 8Gb didn't make a blind bit of difference. I purge that frequently because I just don't want to risk losing anything.
And I don't find it a hassle at all, it takes about 15 seconds to open Terminal, type in the command and let it do its stuff.

yes my laptop only has 4GB of RAM which is why I was wondering if I need more, since it seems like a lot of mac players here have 8GB or more. I am considering getting more RAM, also because I may be looking to bootcamp and install windows. Would 16GB be enough RAM to install windows and do the partition and everything for bootcamp?
  • edited January 2014
You don't need anymore than 4Gb RAM for Windows. There's a link to my Boot Camp help thread on one of the Links and Guides threads, reading it may help you understand the process a bit better

No, it has to do with the amount of RAM you have and if you clear it out while playing. I suggest reading the three threads mentioned here as they can help you run a smooth, stable game.
